This opinion piece was written by William Moorcroft, one of the members of the Colorado Sleep Society, concerning later start times for middle and high school students. He cites powerful, relevant, and current research on the topic. As discussed at our last meeting, we would like to bring about change in our education system in Colorado (and hopefully beyond) in raising awareness on this issue. Research overwhelmingly shows there are great benefits to students and the quality of their education in delaying school start times to more closely match their natural sleeping schedule. We feel the reason we are not seeing change is that parents and board members are currently more focused on other issues. We would like to bring this issue to the forefront through raising awareness and educating parents, students, pediatricians, board members and the community at large on the benefits of delaying start times.
If you would like to join with us in this cause, please contact us at email@example.com.
